ABSTRACT

Researching from within an organisation in which one is employed has its own unique problems and difficulties. In this personal account of my own experiences of researching within an English Local Education Authority (LEA), I describe some of the problems I encountered and offer my thoughts about undertaking what, in retrospect, was a fairly ambitious study. There are many stories that I could tell and my field notes, documents, research diary and reviews of related literature are extensive. This chapter, however, reflects on some of the personal dilemmas I faced, the problems I experienced and the mistakes I made. I hope what I have to relate will be of interest to, and useful for, others engaged in similar research within their own organisation.
