ABSTRACT

Working memory supports the temporary storage and manipulation of information (Baddeley, 2000; Baddeley & Hitch, 1974). Extensive research over the past 3 decades has established that working memory does not correspond to a single memory store, but is a memory system composed of separable interacting components. Functioning in concert, these components provide a kind of flexible mental workspace that can be used to maintain and transform information in the course of demanding cognitive activities, and that acts as a temporary bridge between externally and internally generated mental representations.
