ABSTRACT

Research into academic writing has typically focused on writing practices in specific disciplines, particularly in terms of students’ induction into a disciplinary area. In this chapter I take a different focus. The focus is on academic writing in terms of a relationship between programmes of governing and the construction of knowledge and academic identities.Drawing on Foucault’s theorization of governmentality (Foucault 1991) together with the Canadian work on genre theory (Freedman and Medway 1994; Freadman 1994, 1998, 2000) I examine a number of my own academic publications.
