ABSTRACT
The above radio report referred to the outcome of attacks by a mental health service user in December 2004. The report blames services for not predicting the risk of offending. In this chapter we will argue that the task of risk assessment in this context raises inherent difficulties. We employ the concept of ecological validity as an analytic tool to consider the difficult task of risk assessment for discharging service users from forensic mental health services.
