ABSTRACT

Instances of physical threat or emotional trauma often go undocumented in academic literature,1 yet numerous social researchers have found themselves in compromising situations that have threatened their physical and/or emotional well-being. In this chapter we challenge this deficiency by raising awareness of the possible risks associated with research, particularly Participatory Action Research (PAR). We also propose some strategies for researchers to manage these risks as ethically and inclusively as possible. We believe this discussion will be valuable to other researchers (see Punch 1994).
