ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss a collaborative research partnership, which has been using Participatory Video (PV) to explore relationships between place, identity and social cohesion in Aotearoa/New Zealand. We comprise an Australian independent audio-video producer based in Wellington (Geoff); members of Ngªti Hauiti, a Mªori ‘tribe’ in the lower North Island (Thomas, Kirsty, Joyce and Adrian); and an English permanent resident geographer working at Victoria University of Wellington (Sara). Our collaborative research has been informed by Participatory Action Research (PAR), critical ethnographic media practices (Pink 2007), and Kaupapa Mªori research, which argues for research by, with and for Mªori (Smith 1999).
