ABSTRACT

Italy is known as a country with a deep and lasting dualism between its Northern part and its South. The increase of European and global integration could influence this dualism, could contribute to a strengthening or weakening of it, since it tends to change the European and Worldwide division of labour not only between countries but between locations. Given this background, the chapter assesses the impact of such changing conditions in the international and European framework on regional cohesion in Italy and on the patterns of convergence.
