It’s no surprise to hear that Britons and Americans-especially womenfrequently associate European countries, traditions, and men with romance. It might be surprising however, given that association, to consider the body of European film and find that romance-at least romance as most AngloAmericans define it-is not a prominent feature. This is particularly true when it comes to romance directed toward female viewers. For most of the history of European film, the notion of a romantic “chick flick” has been as untranslatable in concept as in language.
