ABSTRACT

Transformative learning involves learning to think critically by questioning assumptions and expectations that shape and influence what we think and do. In this chapter the founding father of transformative learning gives an overview of the development of this concept, what it means and why it matters. Some of the main criticisms of his approach to transformative learning are reviewed and, in turn, the author adds a rejoinder to his critics. The chapter also highlights the contribution of alternative perspectives on transformative learning that have expanded our understanding of its potential application in the field of adult education and lifelong learning.
