ABSTRACT

As a discipline, psychology includes a wide array of topics, and curriculum requirements vary considerably across different programs. However, statistics and research methods courses are virtual constants in psychology curricula. Just-in-Time Teaching is a relatively new pedagogy that uses the Internet to prepare students and teachers for highly productive classroom experiences. At JMU, a number of faculty members have adopted JiTT techniques in their psychology classes. Behavior-analytic approaches to classroom instruction, including Programmed Learning, Precision Teaching, and Direct Instruction, tend to be superior to other, more traditional methods of classroom instruction. Teaching statistics and research methods courses effectively can be difficult, time-consuming, and often frustrating. However, based on data the authors have collected, they believe that the approaches discussed in the chapter can be helpful in structuring a more effective learning environment, thus positively affecting both students and instructors.
