ABSTRACT

Scanning the tapestry of human existence, one factor becomes immediately clear-humanity is marked by both incredible diversity and similarity. This chapter is divided into common categories of diversity. After a brief introduction, this chapter highlights the means by which a research methods course can benefit from the infusion of specific diversity areas. The Guidelines for Research in Ethnic Minority Communities address several issues concerning research with persons of African descent that a research methods course can address. The categorizations discussed previously do not reflect the full spectrum or fluidity of diversity as is present across the vast plains of humanity. Infusing diversity issues into research methods courses is not only important, it is a fascinating mechanism with which to assist students in thinking critically and creatively about research methods. Rather, instructors need to discuss the richness of human diversity, and research needs to be inclusive of the entire spectrum of humanity.
