ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the importance of writing as part of the teaching and learning of statistics and research methods in the psychology curriculum. It presents research that suggests that writing within psychology and, specifically, within statistics and methods courses is critical; our model for teaching a writing-intensive research methods and statistics course; and assignments that others find useful to teach writing in these courses. The model presents students with writing as a process, opportunities for improvement without punishment, and multiple assignments from which they can learn the specifics of APA style. Three categories summarize writing assignments according to instructors' learning goals for students: enhanced understanding of statistical concepts, mastery of APA style, and self-evaluation of the student's learning. Most instructors in psychology-based statistics and methods courses require their students to learn APA style. With the many requirements in statistics and methods courses, taking some of the stress out of learning APA style might be helpful.
