I first met David Lee rather longer ago than I sometimes care to remember. I

was his first graduate student and at the time his now classical swinging room

experiments were – well, they were in full swing. It was a heady time to be a

student at Edinburgh University, for the place was buzzing with young, highly

innovative scientists, managed (not altogether without difficulty) by a number of

distinguished, older heads. Even in such elevated company, Dave Lee stood out.
