ABSTRACT

Likewise, tourism is typically taught within subject areas such as tourism management; tourism geography; leisure and tourism management; and tourism studies but includes specific areas of study such as sports tourism; rural tourism and sustainable tourism. Broad concern is with activities and relationships that take place away from typical places of residence. Emphasis is upon private sector activity such as tour operators, airlines and hotels as well as a quasi-public sector including agencies such as the tourist boards and regional development agencies. In addition the nature, impacts and meanings of tourism are now of direct interest. As Davies & Downward (2001) and Downward & Mearman (2004a) argue, the academic analysis of tourism has eclectic origins.
