ABSTRACT

N ot all issues can be expressed in psychotherapy through words. To assume that a family, whether collectively or individually, can verbally articulate intrapsychic and relational issues may well be shortsighted. In general, the assumption that therapy should be limited to verbal and cognitive processing is somewhat insular. When children are involved in the process, this viewpoint is developmentally inappropriate. Persons of all ages can benefit from expressive and projective interventions, such as play therapy.
