Under what circumstances can an ethnic group balance its integration into a mainstream political unit with preservation of its cultural heritage? Would assertion of cultural and ethnic identity be harmful to unity and solidarity across a population? Is cultural education a basis for cultural sustenance of a group? These are essential questions regarding the limits and possibilities of a modern plural society.
