ABSTRACT

In any economy, forecasting of rainfall and renewable water supplies for the upcoming water year are critically important in water management process for crop production, industrial use, hydropower generation, domestic use as well as sustenance of aquatic species. The agricultural production in India is largely dependent on the monsoon rainfall. The timely onset, well distributed and sufficient monsoon rainfall is the key for better agricultural production in the country which directly influences rural poverty alleviation . The total irrigated area in India is around 32% . Therefore, major thrust for increasing agricultural production will have to be in the rainfed area, whose productivity is dependent on the prediction of temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall.
