ABSTRACT

Even to the casual observer it would seem likely that there is some sort of fairly direct relationship between the level of activity in the construction sector and in the economy as a whole. When the construction sector is booming, so too is the economy; when the economy is down, so too is construction. But it is not clear whether this is a coincidence or a causal relationship. If it is a causal relationship, which is the driver and which the follower? This is clearly important in policy terms if the objective is to achieve economic growth and development. In the same way, it is clear that the developmental status of the country has some sort of relationship with the role and size of the construction industry.
