ABSTRACT

The success of firms from developing economies attracts the attention of researchers in almost all sectors. Multinational firms from developing countries are shaking up entire industries and changing the rules of global competition (Business Week, 2006). The construction industry is not an exception to this trend. Although, construction companies from advanced industrialized countries (AIC) still play an important role in the global construction market as providers of construction services that require high technology and know-how, the global construction market is far from restricted to AICs (Bon, 1992). However, the theories in the international business literature are generally developed for the firms from AICs, which can hardly explain the current trends in the global market. In this chapter, the prevailing theories will be revisited and their validity for emerging economy multinationals that are involved in international construction will be discussed.
