ABSTRACT
The impact of the application of meta-analysis within the social sciences is only beginning to be realized. Meta-analysis provides a means of aggregating existing data to investigate and resolve apparent and real empirical inconsistencies. When combined with sophisticated theoretical model building and testing, the procedure permits the full assessment of existing and proposed theories. Meta-analysis, rather than a single technique, represents a cluster of various procedures used to identify and eliminate existing statistical artifacts.
