ABSTRACT

Though the inaugural ministerial-level meeting of the United States-JapanAustralia Trilateral Strategic Dialogue (TSD) occurred in March 2006, trilateral meetings at the senior officials’ level have taken place since 2002. It is important to understand the developments in United States-Japan-Australia cooperation in the context of the Bush administration’s approach towards the Asia-Pacific region, including continuities and changes over the past half decade. Several aspects of the Bush administration’s approach to security and foreign policy in general, and to the Asia-Pacific in particular, have favoured more coordinated ties between the United States, Japan and Australia.
