Teaching Excellence in Higher Education in Japan

This chapter explores the motivations behind and impact of debates and initiatives surrounding teaching excellence in Japanese higher education institutes (HEIs). Following necessarily brief introductions to the idea of teaching excellence, the state of Japanese HEIs and the position of teaching and learning therein, the chapter explores recent initiatives and the main actors in the promotion of a teaching excellence agenda in Japanese higher education, including university teachers, students, government representatives and employers.
