ABSTRACT
The relationship between research and teaching is central to questions about the nature of higher education and to what constitutes excellence within it. In the context of the contemporary Western university, external accountability and funding measures appear to be driving research and teaching apart. Efforts to integrate research and teaching within universities have been increasing in recent years and these defy this trend.
