ABSTRACT

The relationship between therapist, client, and image in sandplay may be represented symbolically as a triple spiral, a continuous long thread that spirals in and out of three interconnected centers: one representing the therapist's development and growth, one the client's development and growth, and one the developing sandplay process. Similar to the energies present in the therapeutic encounter, the thread connects the therapist's countertransference to the client and to the sand picture, the client's transference to the therapist and to the image, and the image born within this relationship to both therapist and client. The sandplay setting can be envisioned as a circle holding the unending triple spiral in continuous ¯ow within it. Supervision can be envisioned as an outer second circle containing this unit (Figure 19.1).
