The Threat from Within

Before 9/11, Australia had been off the radar of large-scale terror activities. Separated from the rest of the Western world by four oceans and between 13 and 27 hours of flying time, Australia had previously enjoyed a fair amount of security in its isolation. Its location within the Pacific Rim followed by its empathy and compliance with the United States and Great Britain has increased its vulnerability in the region.
