ABSTRACT

In his celebrated poem ``The Dead Woman,'' Pablo Neruda wrote: ``My feet will want to march toward where you are sleeping. But I shall go on living.'' This poem points to the dif®culty giving up old, lost objects and ways. If the poets discovered the unconscious (as Freud believed) and have always known its power, it is perhaps because they intuitively sense that the unconscious has its reasons which are often blind to rational thought.1
