ABSTRACT

The prevailing zeitgeist in 21st-century American education is about meeting academic standards. Too little emphasized, however, is the skill set needed by children and youth to get along with adults and peers in school. Academic skill development will always be the preeminent mission of school, yet we know that employers especially value the prospective employee who works well with a team, is an effective problem-solver, and brings a basic sociability to the work place. These assets are also critical components of one’s mental health and quality of life.
