ABSTRACT

Since the mid- to late 1990s, the Internet’s political significance has been a recurrent theme amongst researchers and in popular debates (cf. Holmes 1997; Hague & Loader 1999; Wilhelm 2000; Margolis & Resnick 2000; Blumler & Gurevitch 2001; Bentivegna 2002; Meikle 2002; Jenkins & Thoburn 2003). What is the Internet’s significance for democracy? What new political movements can it bring about? In which ways can it remould people’s role and identity as citizens?
