ABSTRACT

Greedy people want our country And enemies have interfered with us. They think about colonizing us Trough political games and support of different military groups. —Malang Kohestani, 2003 For people in Afghanistan, the events of September 11, 2001, are remembered primarily as the trigger that prompted massive U.S. military action in their homeland. As the Taliban regime persisted in “sheltering” Osama bin Laden that autumn, the United States retaliated by invading the country, establishing a long-term military presence and promoting an uneasy political transition that continues to evolve today. While the hunt for bin Laden and Al Qaeda members was cited as justification for the war, ultimately it was the Afghan people who were caught in the crossfire, and who have accounted for the greatest number of its casualties.
