The Place of “Culture and Parenting” in the Ecological Contextual Perspective on Developmental Science

Human beings do not grow up, and adults do not parent, in isolation, but in multiple contexts (Bornstein, 2002; Bronfenbrenner, 1999; Lerner, Rothbaum, Boulos, & Castellino, 2002). In this chapter, we discuss the several ecological contexts in which children develop and parents parent so that we can better understand how different contexts of development influence childhood and parenthood.
