ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we shift our attention to the second oval of San Diego's nested learning communities (see Chapter 1, Figure 1.1), the intersection encounter between school-based leaders (chiefly principals and peer coaches) and teachers. Although one step removed from the core of teaching and learning (the classroom), the interaction between school leaders and teachers is critical. School leaders were expected to work with teachers to assist students to learn subject matter. Because literacy was the first school subject to be addressed by the reform, this chapter, like the previous one, focuses on that subject area in examining the ways in which school leaders assisted teachers.
