ABSTRACT
The assumption that architectural theory and architecture itself should occupy a critical
position has recently been challenged, especially in the United States. The ‘critical
assumption’ relied on the acceptance of critical theory as the most legitimate theo-
retical framework for architects, theorists, and critics. There are reasons to believe in
the continuing validity of this critical project.
