ABSTRACT

Holmes and Brown established a themed approach to quality enhancement audit at the University of Northumbria in 1998/9 (Holmes and Brown, 2000) in order to review university activities across a number of themes. Essentially the methodology involves asking a small team of university staff volunteers to scrutinise closely what an institution says about itself in its published documentation and on its website, and then to interview staff at all levels, students and other stakeholders to see how far actuality matches aspiration. This approach was subsequently used with modification in a number of contexts, including Higher Education institutions (HEIs) in New Zealand and Ireland, and has more recently been adopted as a means of identifying good practice and areas for action at Leeds Metropolitan University. This chapter outlines some of the outcomes of such an internal quality enhancement audit on the experiences of international students undertaken during the academic year 2005/6.
