ABSTRACT
This chapter is based on a large-scale study on support for international degree-seeking students in Higher Education. The study, carried out by the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) between October 2005 and October 2006, identified, described and analysed numerous examples of good practice in international student support in different countries, in terms of preparatory programmes prior to the undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme, as well as examples during the degree programmes in their different phases and aspects. Countries included in the study were Australia, Canada, Hungary, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and to a lesser extent France. The chapter is based on information gathered from a selection of institutions in these counties, and explores the main motivations behind international student support, analyses the different approaches to services at institutional level, and describes briefly the main service items and organisational models of support for international degree students.
