ABSTRACT

Arthur Piaget 1 was born on 25 November 1865 in Yverdon (Canton of Vaud). His father, Frédéric (1830–1884), remained affiliated with Neuchâtel’s Ancien Régime after the royalist counter-revolution of 1856 and, as a result, settled in Yverdon soon after that date. He came from a family from La Côte-aux-Fées who have figured in civic records since the seventeenth century. The family belonged to a lineage already mentioned in the middle of the fourteenth century in the Val-de-Travers. The name Piaget is derived from the French word péager, which translates as toll-collector, and it is supposed that the family earned its living that way.
