ABSTRACT

This chapter represents the compilation of over half a century of work in the mental health ®eld. In this period of time I wore many hats, which were associated with the tri-disciplines psychology, psychiatry and social work, as well as the broad range of expressive arts therapies. In 1970 I was instrumental in creating one of the ®rst pioneering graduate art therapy training programmes in the United States. In the interim I have been a parttime sculptor and associated with one of the ®rst post-masters expressive therapy training programmes in the country. The ®rst part of this chapter emphasises work with students, which takes place at Pratt Institute, located in Brooklyn, New York. The chapter then deals with supervision that takes place in a private practice setting. I will ®rst offer a framework that has gradually evolved over this period of time.
