ABSTRACT
Environmentalism and feminism face the same challenge: How do we build alliances that do not squash diversity? To do so, we must appreciate the heterogeneity of global coalitions as well as the tentativeness of both linkages and constituent elements. To the extent that social movements define their struggles in relation to histories of ideas, we must retool those histories to allow ourselves to imagine complex global encounters. This means reworking the histories of feminist and environmental theory. We need frameworks that show how multicultural alliances do not filter, misuse, or distort original truths, but rather spark the creative contingencies in which all theory is built.
