ABSTRACT

Caroline Lavinia Scott was born in Oxford, Ohio, on October 1, 1832, to John Witherspoon Scott and Mary Potts Neal Scott. Her parents were married in 182 5, and she had two sisters Mary and Elizabeth— and two brothers—John and Henry. Her father had trained for the Presbyterian ministry. At the time of Caroline’s birth, he taught mathematics and natural science at Miami University. Her mother was the daughter of a Philadelphia banker and businessman.
