ABSTRACT

Born in Canton, Ohio, on June 8, 1847, Ida Saxton was the daughter of James A. Saxton and Katherine “Kate” Dewalt Saxton. Her family was prominent in the life of her native town. Ida's paternal grandfather, John Saxton, began publishing his Canton newspaper, the Ohio Repository, in 1815, and continued to serve as its head until his death in 1871; her father was a wealthy banker and businessman. Through wealth and inclination, the Saxtons were also active in the development and governance of the local Presbyterian church.
