ABSTRACT

Debra Voelker, our investigator, used to say that Robert Sawyer looked like a man destined to be executed. I would protest, but deep down I knew she was right. During the time I represented him, he came very close to execution four times in one year and each time I believed it was over. Robert actually came to believe that as long as I was representing him, he wouldn’t be executed. When I quit my job representing men on death row in Louisiana and told Robert that other lawyers would continue working for him, he looked at me aghast. In his mind I had just pronounced the sentence of death.
