ABSTRACT
Play is what children do instead of work. An adult who says she needs time to play means she has been working too much. In current slang a player is a man who pursues relationships without being serious about them, i.e., not working at them. Yet in theatre and sports, a “player” is a participant, the person actually doing the work.
