ABSTRACT

Ancient storytelling dances of India have mesmerized me since I first encountered them. I pursued this art form from an early age as a student of the legendary south Indian dancer T. Balasarawati (Bala), who had the astonishing ability to soulfully interpret ancient songs and poems by summoning characters of Hindu mythology from deep within herself. When I was presented with film of Birju Maharaj performing, I recognized some of this quality in his abhinaya, or storytelling-musicality, depth of expression, and playfulness-which reminded me of Bala. I knew enough to realize that very few living artists have been able to master this highly refined aspect of classical Indian dance.
