ABSTRACT

Flor de Margarita Pérez Pérez of San Pedro Chenalhó first heard the story of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire in New York City during a rally she attended for International Women’s Day in 1996 in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. She wept as she heard about the 146 women who died in the fire because their managers had locked them in the building. Soon after returning home, she wrote a song commemorating the women’s deaths that linked them to the struggles of women in Chenalhó.
