ABSTRACT

Although alcohol beverages provide considerable personal pleasure and social benefit, they can also cause serious personal and social harm if consumed irresponsibly. If one accepts that it is possible to have a healthy community in which alcohol is consumed, then one needs to examine the conditions in which this can occur. This will also require that the government, the alcohol industry, and individuals sacrifice certain self-interests for the common good. Each must act in a manner that does not undermine the public good, exercising social responsibility. Although each player has his or her own role, all should work in collaboration as far as possible.
