ABSTRACT
Australia has operated as an English-speaking industrial society for only a little over 200 years, when English sailors first landed in Botany Bay in Sydney in 1788. Indigenous people have occupied the continental landmass for at least 40,000 years. Today the Australian population numbers almost 20 million people and is a modern democratic and multicultural society.
