ABSTRACT

As If for string trio and synthesized tape was composed during 1981 and 1982 by Paul Lansky, who is currently a member of the composition faculty at Princeton University. The approximately twenty-two-minute composition is organized into four movements: “In Preparation” (4:48), “At a Distance” (5:36), “In Practice” (6:53), and “In Distinction” (4:16) (see Lansky 1982). The players read from the full score; the tape occupies a grand staff followed by separate staves for violin, viola, and ‘cello. Both the score and tape part are available from the composer through Grimtim Music (see Lansky 2004). The recording used for this analysis is available from Centaur Records. All score excerpts included in this chapter appear with the permission of the composer.
