ABSTRACT
When we think of art, we imagine something that enhances awareness through universal forms of expression. But the norms of artistic expression are at the same time cultural norms, which can vary. What usually allows us to overlook this fact is that the norms of the Western art are often regarded as the universal norms of art. Art is marked by its cultural and national origins. More importantly, the label “art” only carries weight when it is backed by power. It thus calls attention to those who have the power to make the label stick, and not only to the objects called “art.”
