ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on Chapter 4, and offers a statistical portrait of enrollment and graduation patterns in the 2000 Chinese Census. Looking at school enrollment and attainment in 2000 provides us with an important insight into the effect of economic and institutional reforms of the 1990s. As is well known by now, the decade of the 1990s marked an unprecedented period of rapid economic, social, and institutional change throughout China. Overall, per capita GDP grew 8.9 percent annually between 1991 and 2000 in real terms (National Bureau of Statistics 2005: Table 3.3: 53).
