ABSTRACT

As other chapters in this volume illustrate, youth activism groups have fought successfully in recent years to improve conditions for young people in their communities and schools (e.g., HoSang, 2005; Kwon, 2005; O'Donoghue, 2005). Such efforts defy pervasive deficit-based misconceptions about youth and enable them to challenge punitive social policies (Ginwright, Cammarota, & Noguera, 2005).
