ABSTRACT

Is Indonesia a “terrorist haven”? There have been many violent incidents in the Maluku islands and Poso in central Sulawesi between Muslim and Christian inhabitants in the past few years. The Laskar Jihad, a paramilitary organization, dispatched thousands of volunteer “holy warriors” to Maluku. Recent developments, especially the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, and the bombing in Bali on October 12, 2002, further created a dangerous and militant image of Indonesian Muslims in the world.
